- Identify and analyze major ideas, people and events dealing with the rise of immigration in the US, urban planning, reform in education, labor and society as well as the political changes of the late 19th Century.
- Explain and identify the impact of turn of the 20th century events like technological advances, the expansion of public education and its link to race relations as well as the growth of pop-culture.
- Analyze the link between changes in technology and education to race relations and the growth of pop-culture.
- Compare the ideas of Booker T. Washington and WEB Dubois in reference to the expansion of public education to African Americans at the turn of the 20th century.
- Identify and analyze the impact of segregation on race relations at the turn of the 20th century.

- Analyze the Great West by creating a presentation about an idea, person or event from the era of Westward Expansion.
- Identify the Great Plains, Homestead Act, Sand Creek Massacre, Sitting Bull, George Custer, assimilation and the Dawes Act.
- Analyze the cause and effect of American attitudes toward Native Americans in the mid 19th century.
- Identify the elements which led to the growth of farming and agriculture on the Great Plains.
- Analyze the geographical aspects of the West to understand the technological requirements to settle the West.
